Standardized Testing 101 What Parents of Young Students Should Expect
Standardized Testing 101 What Parents of Young Students Should Expect Standardized testing is incorporated into a younger students education for a variety of reasons, including state requirements and helping teachers gauge progress. If youre the parent of a young child, keep an eye out for parent notifications about your schools specific tests, and proactively ask your childs teacher for details. Parents of young students should expect a few things from standardized testing periods, including a change in your student's schedule, a shift in classroom regulations, and an impact on students assigned homework. It is important to be prepared and to understand that there are certain things you can anticipate from standardized testing at the elementary school age. Here is what parents of young students should expect when it comes to standardized testing: 1. Know that standardized testing can prompt a change in your students schedule Standardized testing can last from several days to multiple weeks, depending on the type of exam and how your childs school has decided to administer it. This means that most of your students regular classes may be suspended. If he or she usually switches classrooms for different subjects throughout the day, he or she may instead stay in just one or two rooms. Keep an eye out for teacher communication that will tell you what will be different about the week, and go over any questions your child might have. The bulk of testing may happen in the morning or early afternoon, with a regular class or educational game at the end of the day. Be sure to know when testing will be finished, and what happens if your child needs to miss and make up an exam. Generally, theres a day or two allotted for this purpose at the end of the testing period. [RELATED: How to Help Your Elementary School Student Cope with Test Anxiety] 2. Inquire about classroom regulations during standardized testing periods Classroom rules are likely to shift during testing week. Talk with your student about what will and wont change. For example, discuss rules about talking to classmates, asking teachers questions, getting out of his or her seat, and asking to go to the bathroom. Discuss the different kind of attention needed for testing blocks, as well as behavior that will help your child and his or her fellow classmates have a successful experience. 3. Understand how standardized testing affects homework Fewer classes means less homework (usually)! During testing week, many teachers lighten the homework load or give no homework at all, which is a great break for your studentboth mentally and physically. Anticipate a possible change in your childs mood; he or she may come home more energized or more tired from a day of testing. Encourage your child to: Stretch his or her legs Play outside Do a project Read a book Play a game. Dont forget to encourage early bedtimes as well, so your student will be well-rested for the next day. [RELATED: How Parents Can Help with Elementary Homework Challenges] 4. Research when you will receive standardized test scores Depending on the type of exam, scores might come out in the next month or even in the next academic year. Be sure to know when you can expect them, and how they will (or wont) affect your child. When the scores do come out, discuss with both your students teacher and your student what the numbers mean, and what you and your child can take away from them. In addition to the above tips, dont forget to have a balanced breakfast ready for your student, and make sure he or she has all of the supplies needed for testing week. Talk about the seriousness of the test, and if he or she is nervous, talk about the tests function in the grand scheme of things. Should you have any questions, contact your childs teacher or principal, who would be happy to discuss requirements with you before testing week. Successful students and people possess these five soft skills and encourages parents to nurture them in their children whenever possible: Communication skills Verbal and nonverbal communication skills are frequently touted as the most important skills in any career. Parents should encourage their children to express their ideas and opinions clearly when writing or speaking, but its also crucial to build careful, attentive listening skills as well. Empathy Empathy is one component of emotional intelligence and something that helps people develop strong interpersonal connectionsa key to success in life. Parents can help their children learn to recognize how their actions and words impact and influence others, both positively and negatively. The ability to understand others feelings is critical for building good relationshipswith friends as well as teachers, classmates, coworkers and bosses. Perseverance Most parents have recited the age-old adage, If at first, you dont succeed, try, try again, to their children before. Without question, life is full of challenges. One of the most important skills children can acquire is that of perseverance. Parents can facilitate the development of this trait by teaching their children to set goals and lay out smaller steps toward achieving those goals and by always talking about challenges as opportunities for learning and growth. Problem-solving Children who take a proactive approach to solving problems and overcoming roadblocks have a big advantage. When facing problems large and small, children should try out different solutions. How to Take an Active Role in Your Pre-Med School Experience
How to Take an Active Role in Your Pre-Med School Experience Image via Pexels Each year, thousands of students enter their first year of college determined to become successful doctors. Theyâre dubbed pre-med students (not as a major but as a direction for their studies). While many colleges donât offer pre-med degrees, you could be deemed a pre-med student if your program is heavy with biology and chemistry courses. Many students declare for med school each year because they are passionate about medicine and making a difference in peopleâs health. And itâs a bit easier if you have the learning chops and stamina. A pre-med degree program is difficult enough just by having so much to study usually within short spaces of time. Knowing how to take an active role in your pre-med experience can help you to learn more and immensely prepare you for taking the MCAT and applying to medical school after you graduate. Here are some ways you can take an active role in your pre-med school experience. 1. Take inventory of your classes As a pre-med student, you will be expected to complete a certain number of courses in math, biology, chemistry, health sciences, and English, among others. The coursework can be tedious and time-consuming, but with good time management, you can do it. Donât allow the coursework to go in one ear and out the other. In other words, donât go through your classes passively. Think about the material even after class is over. Find something that interests you if you can and make sure you know what youâre getting into. It would be a waste of time to go through nearly 10 years of schooling only to find out youâre not that passionate or interested in medicine to begin with. Outline your classes and make sure you know what youâre getting into. 2. Get involved in pre-med or non-pre-med student organizations and extracurricular activities While it is true that pre-med school is very demanding, it does not have to take away from your social life or from being involved in useful out-of-the-classroom experiences. Such involvement will help to improve your communication and leadership skills. You will be able to learn from professionals in the field and seek support from students who are traveling the same path. In addition to that, there is the very high possibility of networking and developing lifelong friendships. Not to mention that you may also meet your future spouse at one of these organizations. Beyond that, medical schools do look at your extracurricular activities and use it as a factor in determining admittance. So these opportunities are not to be underestimated. 3. Volunteer at a hospital or medical facility at which you would one day like to work Medical schools want to see that you have the aptitude for the field through your GPA and courses. They also want to see that youâre an empathic person who is willing to listen to peopleâs needs and take care of them in the best possible way. One way to show this is to volunteer in the medical field before committing to medical school. Volunteering at a hospital or in a surgeonâs office is a great experience, and at some schools, it is required. However, donât pick a place just because you think it will look good on your resume. Pick a place where you will feel fulfilled and be able to make a difference. All experience is good but an experience just for the sake of an experience is less useful. Youâll get more out of it if you enjoy it and are passionate about it. This will also shine through in your medical school applications and accompanying essays. 4. Shadow physicians in a variety of specialties Similar to doing volunteer work is an experience called shadowing. Some pre-med students will shadow physicians to get as close to a hands-on experience as they can in different medical careers. Shadowing is basically following and observing someone closely. Due to rules regarding privacy and confidentiality, some doctors will not allow shadowing. However, many will especially if youâre planning on going into the same field (e.g., a student planning to be a neurologist shadowing a neurologist). A good place to begin is with your family or personal doctor. Some colleges have matching programs in which the college has connections with local doctors and hospitals and will help match student to doctor. If nothing else, take it upon yourself to email, call, or visit hospitals and doctors whom you have researched and ask about shadowing policies. 5. Start working on MCAT prep now The MCAT is a cumulative test that covers much of the topics you studied in pre-med school including biology, chemistry, physics, and so forth. By the time most students begin even thinking about the MCAT in earnest, theyâve forgotten or vaguely remember introductory concepts from their freshman and sophomore classes. So, to steer clear of that, start as soon as you can to study the MCAT. Get a MCAT prep book, flashcards, or even a tutor that you meet with for an hour a week. This will keep you in the mindset of taking the MCAT even if it is two years away. College is an incredible time to learn and take advantage of so many opportunities. As you engage with other students and teachers, remember to prioritize your studies. Turn everything into a learning experience and grow, grow, grow. Learn more about Kaplanâs test prep options and start building the confidence you need for Test Day.
The 50 Biggest Tutoring Cities in the U.S.
The 50 Biggest Tutoring Cities in the U.S. Tutorz.com researched its database to determine the biggest tutoring cities in the United States. To accomplish this objective we compare the population of the top 50 U.S. cities with the number of requests for personal tutoring for all subjects ranging from math, over English to essay writing. Information about personal tutor requests originates from Tutorzâ database and is bound by the years 2007 and 2010. The ranking of U.S. cities by population is based on a Wikipedia publication. The table below ranks the top 10 U.S. cities by the number of requests for private tutors and compares it with the cityâs rank by population. City Rank by Tutoring Referrals City Rank by Population New York, NY 1 1 Houston, TX 2 4 Los Angeles, CA 3 2 Chicago, IL 4 3 Indianapolis, IN 5 12 Atlanta, GA 6 40 Dallas, TX 7 9 Brooklyn, NY 8 Miami, FL 9 44 San Jose, CA 10 10 Not surprisingly New York is number one by tutoring requests and population. Tutorz.com referred in New York City alone 371 private tutors to students seeking help with homework. New York is also the most populated city in the U.S. with 8.4 million citizens approximately. Also noteworthy, education is one of New Yorkâs bigger industries facilitated by notable private universities such as Columbia University, New York University, and Pace University. Rank 2nd, 3rd and 4th is held by Los Angeles, CA, Chicago, IL and Houston, TX. For these 3 cities, the tutoring rank agrees approximately with the population rank. These cities are the home of renowned universities including University of California at Los Angeles, University of Chicago and Rice University Houston). At rank 5 we have the first big surprise: Indianapolis, IN is ranked 5 by tutoring while only the 12th largest city. This result might be explained with the number of fine universities in Indianapolis (incl. Purdue University, University of Indianapolis, and Butler University). Another attempt to explain this result is to theorize that the citizens of Indianapolis place higher value on education or have recognized the substantial benefits of tutoring. Lastly, we admit that the Tutorzâ data is biased towards areas of higher marketing activity, although no special emphasis was place to Indianapolis in past marketing campaigns. The next surprise is Atlanta, GA being ranked 6th by tutoring. With a population of about 420,000 Atlanta scores place 40 in Wikipedia. Perhaps the Georgia State University or Clark Atlanta University has helped to boost Atlantaâs rank. But without a doubt Tutorz partner website, www.sapioadvisors.com a local tutoring company has helped to let Atlanta fly high in ranks. On place 7 we record another Texas city Dallas, TX. The rank of Dallas agrees roughly with its rank by population (9th). Brooklyn, NY is ranked 8th. Technically Brooklyn is a part of New York City and thus not featured in Wikipediaâs rank by population. But nice parents and students prefer to look for tutors in Brooklyn rather than New York we list it here separately. Note, if Brooklyn were a city it would be the home of more than 2 million people. Miami, FL holds rank 9 by tutoring but is according to Wikipedia only the 44th largest U.S. city. This surprising result can be theorized with the same arguments as for Indianapolis, IN. And finally, San Jose, CA maintains rank 10 in both the Tutorz database and Wikipedia publication. Is your city not among the top 10? Look at the table below. It ranks the top 50 U.S. cities by the number of requests for private tutors and compares it with the cityâs rank by population. City Rank by Tutoring Referrals City Rank by Population New York, NY 1 1 Houston, TX 2 4 Los Angeles, CA 3 2 Chicago, IL 4 3 Indianapolis, IN 5 12 Atlanta, GA 6 40 Dallas, TX 7 9 Brooklyn, NY 8 Miami, FL 9 44 San Jose, CA 10 10 Kansas City, MO 11 37 Baltimore, MD 12 21 Phoenix, AZ 13 6 Boston, MA 14 22 Sacramento, CA 15 35 Denver, CO 16 26 Philadelphia, PA 17 5 Austin, TX 18 14 Irvine, CA 19 96 Anaheim, CA 20 54 San Diego, CA 21 8 Alexandria, VA 22 177 Northridge, CA 23 Milwaukee, WI 24 28 Washington, DC 25 24 Cincinnati, OH 26 62 Fremont, CA 28 95 Encino, CA 29 Baton Rouge, LA 30 85 Cleveland, OH 31 45 Minneapolis, MN 32 48 Memphis, TN 33 20 Las Vegas, NV 34 30 Seattle, WA 35 23 Gainesville, FL 36 202 Nashville, TN 37 25 Orlando, FL 38 79 Albany, NY 39 Oxnard, CA 40 113 Tampa, FL 41 55 Detroit, MI 42 18 San Antonio, TX 43 7 Portland, OR 44 29 Fort Lauderdale, FL 45 141 Tucson, AZ 46 33 Charlotte, NC 47 17 Fort Worth, TX 48 16 Salt Lake City, UT 49 49 New Haven, CT 50 189 Overall the rank by tutoring agrees overall with the rank by population. There are a few exceptions, however. The cities of Irvine, CA and Northridge CA are both ranked substantially higher by tutoring than by population. They hold in common that the founders of Tutorz.com have studied at both universities and created some awareness about the Tutorz in the local population. At UC Irvine Tutorz.com was the winner of the HiTech Octane Computing Competition and at CSUN (Northridge) Prof. Dye of the Math department became a supporter of the website. Oxnard, CA ranked 113 by population letâs eye brows rise by being ranked 40 by tutoring. After all, Oxnard is mostly an agricultural community on a plane in Californiaâs Ventura County. Yet again, this aberration in rank can be easily explained by the fact that Tutorz.com is headquartered in the nearby (small) town of Port Hueneme, CA. Finally, Cleveland, OH is ranked 14 places higher by tutoring than by population. Tutorz has targeted Cleveland, OH as one of its keywords in the SEO campaign. As we can see these efforts have paid off. In summary, a cityâs number of requests for private tutors correlates with its population size. A number of cities rank notably higher by tutoring (Indianapolis, Miami) and we are hard-pressed to provide a reasonable explanation for aberration. Other exceptional cities (Oxnard, Irvine, Northridge) rank higher due to Tutorzâ personal relationship with these locations.
